El Jardi and Zipoli pick up ranked doubles win
Houston: Diae El Jardi and Allison Zipoli keyed a strong start by #44 Rice with a win over a ranked opponent, but 56th-ranked SMU rallied to take a 4-2 decision at the George R. Brown Tennis Center on Saturday.
Doubles: El Jardi and Zipoli raced to a 6-2 win over the Mustang's 54th-ranked doubles team of Taylor Johnson and Jackie Nylander, for their first win over a ranked opponent to give Rice the early advantage. Darya Schwartzman and Saara Orav followed shortly after with a 6-2 win of their own at the second line to give Rice the early lead.
Singles: SMU fired back by wining four of six first sets in singles and swiftly closed out matches at the second and third lines to take a 2-1 lead. Freshman Marte Lambrecht made it a memorable birthday, winning in straight sets at the sixth line to tie the match at 2-2. While the Mustangs rebounded from a first-set loss at the first line to win and move to within one point of the clinch, Rice responded by forcing third sets at the two remaining courts before SMU closed out the match with a win at the fifth line.
Up Next: The Owls will close out their 2023 dual season next weekend with a road match at Houston on Saturday at 1 p.m. and then a home match with Prairie View on Sunday at noon to celebrate Senior Day.
