Campbell, Dyson and Kane set to compete in USA Open Water Championships
Ahalya Lettenberger opened her quest to qualify for a third Para Swimming World Championships on Thursday with a pair of top-three finishes while Rice teammates Shannon Campbell, Ella Dyson, and Amelia Kane will compete this weekend at the USA Swimming Open Water Nationals.
Lettenberger opened the evening by placing third in the 100-meter freestyle and came back later to place second in the 100 breaststroke. She is one of nearly 140 athletes from 13 nations competing at the Citi Para Swimming World Series event in Minneapolis, Minnesota April 20-22 looking to earn a spot to represent Team USA at the Manchester 2023 World Championships (July 31- August 6).
She is scheduled to swim with 400 freestyle on Friday, an event she has won both a silver (2019) and bronze (2022) at the last two world championships. She will swim the 200 IM on Saturday. She was the silver medalist in the 200 IM at the Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020.
Dyson, Campbell, and Kane combined to lead Rice to the team title at the CSCAA Open Water Championship in North Miami, Florida in December, with Dyson taking the individual title, Kane eighth, and Campbell ninth. Dyson and Campbell will compete in the 10K race at 7 a.m. (central) at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Florida, and then be back in the water along with Kane for the 5K race on Sunday at 6:35 a.m.
Dyson was the American Athletic Conference champion in the 1,650 freestyle in February while Campbell won the same event at the Conference USA Championship in 2022. Kane was the C-USA Champion in the 500 freestyle as a freshman.
