Alamar, Kay and Modkins open spring drills with the Owls
Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren formally introduced Pete Alamar (special teams), Jeremy Modkins (cornerbacks), and Jon Kay (linebackers) as new additions to his coaching staff as the Owls opened spring drills on Monday. In addition, Bloomgren announced defensive coordinator Brian Smith, who has coached the linebackers for the last two seasons, will return to coach the safeties as he did in his first three years with the Owls.
"We are bringing in three proven winners," Bloomgren stated "Pete Alamar has been a head coach, an offensive coordinator at the FBS level and then he's been a special teams coordinator Arizona, Cal, Fresno State and then Stanford. When I was with him at Stanford, we were elite in special teams and I know how he's going to help each of these guys. Jeremy Modkins played for Gary Patterson and then worked for him and kept learning and growing. He recruited and developed (Tre'Vius) Hodges-Tomlinson who won every DB award in the country last year. John Kay found a way to capture the hearts and minds of kids enough to go 75-4 the last five years and North Shore. He's a proven commodity."
Alamar brings over 20 years of college experience guiding special teams units, including stints at Arizona (1996-99), California (2003-09) and Fresno State (2010-11) and most recently at Stanford (2012-22). Throughout his career, his kickers, punters and return specialists have regularly been among the nation's best and his squads have continually ranked among the nation's best in blocked kicks and kick coverage. At Staford, he coached three 1,000-yard kick returners
Alamar coached on eight teams that won at least 10 games -- two at Arizona, two at Cal and four at Stanford – and was a part of 18 bowl teams.
Modkins joins the Owls from the Minnesota Vikings, where he spent the 2022 season as a defensive analyst after eight years on the staff at TCU. A former standout defender for the Horned Frogs, Modkins joined Gary Patterson's staff in 2014 as a defensive analyst and was promoted to cornerbacks coach in 2018. Over those four seasons, he produced one first-team, All-American (Tre'Vius Hodges-Tomlinson), one first-round pick in the NFL draft (Jeff Gladney) and four All-Big XII selections.
Kay joins the Owls after compiling a 117-18 record in nine seasons at Galena Park North Shore High School. He led the Mustangs to four 6A state championships (2015, 2018, 2019, and 2021) and played for a fifth this past season. His 2018 squad was named national champion by Max Preps and Massey and second by USA Today and his 2022 team finished at No. 8 in USA Today's final rankings despite their loss in the state title game. His four state titles are the most for any Houston-area school during his tenure as head coach. Before taking the helm at North Shore, Kay helped head coach David Aymond develop the Mustangs into one of the top programs in the state, culminating with the school's first state title in 2003 at Rice Stadium.
The Owls will hold three practices this week before spring break begins on March 11 and then reconvene on Monday, March 20 for four weeks of workouts leading up the annual Blue-Gray Spring Game at 6 p.m. on April 15.
