Face #68 New Mexico on Sunday
Albuquerque, New Mexico: Santiago Navarro made his second career singles win in dual competition even more memorable as his first, grinding out a straight-set win to provide his second consecutive clinching point as Rice defeated Portland 4-2 at the McKinnon Family Tennis Stadium on Saturday.
Doubles: The Owls and Pilots split matches at the second and third lines, but Rice took the opening point for the eighth time in 12 matches this spring as Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear took a 6-4 decision at the first line to give Rice the early lead.
Singles: Barnett swept to a swift win at the third line to score the Owls second point of the day, but the Pilots tied the match with wins at the first two positions. Campbell Salmon put the Owls back in front with a strong finish at the fifth line and while Kabeer Kapasi was forced to a third set by dropping a second set tiebreaker, Navarro Portland's hopes of continuing the match with a 7-4 win in the tiebreaker to take his match 7-5, 7-6.
Up Next: The Owls will face #68 New Mexico, a 4-2 winner over Portland on Friday, at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
