Van der Westhuizen Named C-USA Field Athlete of the Week

DALLAS – After an incredible showing last weekend at the 40th annual Victor Lopez Classic, Mckyla Van der Westhuizen has been named the Conference USA Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
"We have a tremendous freshman in Mckyla Van der Westhuizen! She is one of the best athletes we have ever brought to Rice," said women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan. "She is already one of the best javelin throwers in the nation and she is also a wonderful teammate for our team."
Van der Westhuizen won the javelin with a mark of 56.68m (185-11) in just her second collegiate meet. The mark places her second all-time at Rice and currently lands her first in C-USA, first in the NCAA South-Central region and second in the NCAA.
The Owls will be back in action this week at the Texas Relays at the University of Texas.
