3/16/2023 6:10:00 PM | Women's Track & Field
HOUSTON – The Rice women's track and field team had a successful start to the 2023 outdoor season at the University of Houston's Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Invite.
Mckyla Van der Westhuizen won the only event title for the Owls, taking the javelin title. Julie Perez and Morgan Fey took second and fourth, respectively, in discus while Fey also finished third in shot put.
As a team, Rice had seven top-10 finishes in the meet, with all being in the top five.
Post Meet Reaction - Head Coach Jim Bevan
"We started the outdoor season with some great performances. Our participation as a team was limited, but the performances from Mckyla, Julie and Arayna were outstanding. Mckyla's javelin performance was the number three mark in the country and should get her into the NCAA meet. Julie started with her best opening mark in her life and Arayna had the best jump for her in a year in the long jump. Conditions were tough, with swirling winds and spitting rain. We have been waiting for the first meet for Mckyla, as she has lots of promise at the national level in javelin."
