DALLAS – After setting a personal best in the shot put at the Houston Invitational last Friday, Erna Gunnarsdottir has been named the Conference USA Female Field Athlete of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
"We are so excited for Erna this year. She is already an All-American and we are looking forward to a great indoor and outdoor season," said women's track and field head coach Jim Bevan. "She is the Icelandic record holder and she falls in the line of the three previous All-American shot putters at Rice. We can't wait to see what all she accomplishes this season."
Gunnarsdottir won the shot put with a throw of 56-10.75, setting a personal record. The throw ranks her first in C-USA and in the DI South-Central Region, while also placing her ninth in the NCAA.
The Owls will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic.
