DALLAS – Rice sophomore All-American distance runner Grace Forbes became the third athlete in Conference USA history to earn consecutive Female Track Athlete of the Year awards, earning the superlative on Thursday for a second straight year, the league office announced.
Forbes joins UTEP's Tobi Amusan (2016-17) and UCF's Octavious Freeman (2012-13) as others who have won consecutive C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Year awards.
The Wallingford, PA native most recently finished as the runner-up at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, finishing second in the 10,000m with a season-best time of 32:48.07 to earn USTFCCCA All-American honors for the fifth time between her track and field and cross country careers. Her second place performance was the first by an Owl at the NCAA Outdoor Championships since Allison Beckford (400m hurdles) and Alice Falaiye (long jump) in 2001.
After being diagnosed with a chronic autoimmune disorder in April and missing the entirety of the indoor season, Forbes battled back to return to the track with a vengeance.
She placed second (4:23.20) in the 1500m in her season debut at the Texas A&M 44 Farms Team Invitational before making her hometown return at the Penn Relays, winning the 10,000m in 32:59.15. Forbes then swept the 5000m and 10,000m at the C-USA Championships, her 11th and 12th career C-USA individual titles.
In Fayetteville, AR, Forbes won her second consecutive NCAA West 10,000m crown with a winning time of 33:35.30.
