Duo earns track, field Athlete of the Week accolades
DALLAS – Rice women's track and field sophomore distance runner Grace Forbes and junior thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir were selected the Conference USA Female Track Athlete of the Week and Field Athlete of the Week, respectively, the league office announced on Tuesday (5/3).
Forbes returned home in style by winning the 10,000m at the prestigious Penn Relays, finishing in a time of 32:59.15 to defeat the next closest competitor by nearly 24 seconds. Forbes' time currently ranks third in the NCAA this season. The Wallingford, Pa. native pulled away late in the race by running her final 5000m in 15:54.7, besting everyone in the 20-runner field.
Gunnarsdottir won her third outdoor shot put competition of the season with a winning throw of 17.14m (56-3.00) at the Texas A&M Alumni Muster. The Iceland native, who holds the top mark in C-USA this season at 17.29m, set a meet record on Saturday on her fourth attempt and has now achieved 17.00m or better eight times this season.
The Owls will next set their eyes on this Friday's Tom Tellez Invitational, hosted by the University of Houston. The Conference USA Championships will be held May 12-15 in San Antonio, hosted by UTSA.
