Perez Earns All-Conference Honors at C-USA Championships

Owls qualify six athletes for Sunday's finals
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Rice junior thrower Julie Perez became the third women's track and field member to earn all-conference honors at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships with a second place result Saturday afternoon in the discus.
Perez, who placed fourth in the hammer throw on Friday, earned her fourth career medal stand appearance with a heave of 49.80m (163-04) on her fourth attempt, coming up just short of UTEP's Krishna Jayasankar (50.02m) for the top mark.
Junior distance runner Maddie Forbes earned an additional team point for the Owls to conclude the evening, finishing eighth overall (11:19.13) in the 3000m steeplechase.
Rice qualified six additional athletes for Sunday's finals, including sophomore distance runner Taigen Hunter-Galvan, who punched her ticket for both the 1500m (9th) and 800m (7th). Caitlin Wosika qualified in the 1500m as well with a fifth place (4:34.04) finish while Alyssa Balandran was sixth (2:11.02) in the 800m. Justice Coutee-McCullum (6th-100m hurdles) and Savannah Simms (8th-400m hurdles) also qualified for championship Sunday.
The Owls currently sit in first place as a team with 37 points with six of 21 events scored.
Competition picks back up tomorrow beginning at 1 p.m. with the triple jump.
