Simpson-Sullivan, Forbes Win Titles at C-USA Championships

Duo defends conference championships
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Rice All-Americans Tara Simpson-Sullivan and Grace Forbes continued their dominance at the Conference USA Championships by repeating as champions in their respective events to highlight the team's day two performance Friday at the Park West Athletics Complex.
Simpson-Sullivan defended her hammer throw title from last season with another record-breaking performance, winning the event with a mark of 69.39m (227-08). That distance bested her own school record for the fourth time this season and broke her own previous meet record (66.01m) established last season. Simpson-Sullivan's record-breaking throw came on her second attempt as the Penrith, England native moved into ninth place in the NCAA this season while securing her fourth career C-USA individual title.
Forbes concluded the evening by winning her second-straight 10,000m title with a time of 34:54.95. The sophomore distance runner won her 11th combined conference title between her track and field and cross country careers and will have another opportunity on Sunday when she competes in the 5000m.
The Owls earned an additional eight team points throughout the day with a fourth place finish from Julie Perez (55.14m/SB) in the hammer throw and a sixth place result from Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi (36:47.30) in the 10,000m.
Rice will be back at it on Saturday beginning with the long jump at 1 p.m.
