Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week
Arielle Hayon has been named The American Athletic Conference's Women's Swimming Athlete of the Week after her strong performance last weekend at the Phill Hansel Invitational. She is the second Rice swimmer to be honored by the conference this fall, joining Zoe Spitz who was honored in October.
Hayon captured three individual titles at the Hansel Invitational, capturing the 50 freestyle and the 100 butterfly while lowering her school record in the 200 butterfly while repeating as champion in the event. She also swam legs on four winning relays (200 & 400 freestyle, 200 & 400 medley) and added a fourth-place finish in the 100 freestyle.
Her record-setting 200 fly time of 1:56.64 is currently ranked 25th in the nation while her winning time in the 100 fly (53.05) is ranked 37th.
The sophomore from Agora Hills, California was named the 2022 Conference USA Freshman Swimmer of the Year after winning both butterfly races, setting school records in each and adding a C-USA record in the 100-yard race.
Rice is competing as an affiliate member in The American Athletic Conference this year in advance of joining the conference as a full member on July 1, 2023.
Hayon and the Owls will be back in action on Saturday, December 2 when they travel to College Station to take on Texas A&M at 1 p.m.
