Charlotte, N.C. — The Rice Soccer team saw its season come to an end, falling 4-1 to Charlotte in the quarterfinals of the Conference USA Tournament, Wednesday night in Charlotte, N.C.
The Details
Grace Collins started things for Rice with a pair of shots in the fourth minute, but both were blocked. But in the 14th minute, she dribbled toward the front of the box, faked a pass, and fired a shot just under the crossbar to give Rice the early lead. But Charlotte began to control the play. Three minutes later, Tash Hudson got in alone on Bella Killgore, but her shot attempt went right of the net. However, in the 23rd minute, Hudson's shot was blocked. But Macey Bader picked up the rebound and sent it inside the left post, tying the match at one. Rice almost retook the lead just seconds later as Delaney Schultz and Collins came close to converting a give-and-go, but Schultz's shot went just right of the net. The play then slowed down, with each team just getting one shot the rest of the half and they went into the break tied at one.
The Owls had two chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half. Schultz dribbled toward the 18-yard box, but her shot was blocked. Two minutes later, Collins came down the right side, but Charlotte keeper Brenna Murray made the save. In the 62nd minute, Charlotte sent a cross toward the net. Mikala Furuto attempted to clear it, but she mishandled the ball, knocking it over Killgore and into the net to give Charlotte a 2-1 lead. Six minutes later, Charlotte added to its lead when Bader headed in a pass from Braelynn Francher. Rice came close to cutting into the deficit when Catarina Albuquerque found herself right in front of the net, sending a shot toward the left side.
