Gladewater, Texas — The Rice Golf team fired a seven-under par 281 to sit atop the leaderboard after the first round of the Tempest Collegiate.
The Owls hold a four-stroke lead ahead of second-place South Alabama and were one of just three teams to finish under par. The seven-under par ties Rice's best round to par this year and the fifth best round to par in school history.
Sophomore Raghav Chugh leads the individual tournament, firing his second straight opening round 67 to tie his career-low, sitting at five-under par.
Chugh opened the day with a birdie on the second hole. After four straight pars, he birdied two of the next three to make the turn at three-under. He began the back nine with three consecutive pars before recording birdies on three of the next four holes. But his only blemish came on the 17th hole with a bogey to finish his round one stroke in front of South Alabama's Jordan Plunkett and Rick Frauenberger of Stephen F. Austin.
The New Dehli, India native has recorded four straight rounds in the 60's, becoming the first Owl to do so since Michael Whitehead had five straight over three tournaments in 2010-11. He has four rounds in the 60's this year and 10 in his career, becoming the sixth Owl in school history with at least 10 career rounds in the 60's. He also has a team-leading six rounds of par or better this year and 21 in his career.
Freshman Lukas Boandl had the best round of his young career, firing a three-under par 69 to sit in fourth-place. He began the day with three birdies through the first seven holes. After seven straight pars, he bogeyed the 15th hole. But the Konigsdorf, Austria native got it right back, closing his round with a birdie on the 18th. It's his second round of par or better this year and the first round in the 60's in his career.
Freshman Henry Daly is tied for seventh-place after posting a one-under par 71, his fifth career round of par or better.
Graduate student Jay Kirchdorfer carded a two-over par 74 and is tied for 24th-place. Senior Forrest Park, playing as an individual, is tied for 30th-place at three-over par after posting a 75 and junior Blake Benson is tied for 43rd-place after carding a 76.
JUSTIN EMIL QUOTABLE
"Raghav (Chugh) played an almost flawless round of golf today coupled with a breakthrough round for Lukas (Boandl) and a lot of good from Henry (Daly). The back nine on this course is pretty tight so you really have to control your tee ball out there. There's a lot of golf left for us in this one, so we'll keep strong in our commitment to focusing on each shot we are faced with."
