HOUSTON — No. 13 Rice and Texas scored just two minutes apart in the second half, and played an even match the rest of the way as they played to a 1-1 tie Sunday night from Holloway Field.
The Details
Both teams had chances in the first half. After Mijke Roelfsema got the first shot on goal, Texas responded with three shots over the next nine minutes. In the 14th minute, Natalie Goji, got one off from straight away, but UT goalkeeper Savannah Madden was there for the save. The teams each possessed the ball in the offensive zone, but had nothing to show for it. In the 37th minute Madison Kent was able to skip by the Texas defender, but her shot missed just past the right post and the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Rice didn't waste any time putting pressure on the Longhorns in the second half. In the first five minutes, Delaney Schultz and Caleigh Boeckx both had great chances right in front off throw-ins from Caleigh Page. But Madden was there both times to make the save. In the 62nd minute, Texas broke the stalemate when Emily Jane Cox headed in a corner kick from Lexi Missimo. But Rice got it back just two minutes later when Schultz's shot from the front was blocked and went right to freshman Mariana Elizondo, who fired it past Madden to tie the match. Both teams had excellent chances to take the lead. In the 71st minute, Tatiana Fung hit the right post and then Bella Killgore came up with a save on Julia Grosso. Rice then had a glorious chance in the 83rd minute when Roelfsema's corner kick went right to Vyviene Spaulding standing near the left post and headed the ball toward the goal. But Madden was able to get in front of it just before the ball crossed the goal line, sending the match to overtime.
Rice again started off quick in the first OT, as both Killgore and Schultz got shots on net in the first five minutes. UT then came back and got shots of their own, but Killgore stood tall to keep the match knotted up. In the second overtime, both teams were able to get into the offensive zone, but without anything to show for it, and the match ended in a tie.
What Brian Lee Had to Say
"I thought it was an awesome match. Texas is so good. You have to keep them playing negative and keep them passing the ball wide. We did a super job with that and with defending the crosses that were coming off of it. I feel good about the night and the chances that we created."
