HOUSTON — Rice defender Mijke Roelfsema has been named one of 30 candidates for Senior CLASS Award, announced Thursday afternoon by the organization.
From the list of 30 candidates, a committee will select ten finalists for the 2021 Senior CLASS Award. Those 10 names will then be placed on the official ballot for a nationwide vote. Fan balloting will be coupled with votes from coaches and media to determine the recipient of the award.
To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior or graduate-student and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence: community, classroom, character, and competition.
En route to leading Rice to the 2020-21 NCAA Sweet 16, Roelfsema was named an All-American by the United Soccer Coaches, College Soccer News, and TopDrawerSoccer. Selected as a semifinalist for the MAC Hermann Trophy, she also earned C-USA Defender of the Year, C-USA first team honors, and United Soccer coaches All-South Region first team status.
Prior to this season, Roelfsema was named a College Soccer News preseason first team All-American and a member of TopDrawerSoccer's third team preseason Best XI. In addition to those accolades, she has been named the C-USA preseason Defender of the Year and a member of the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List.
Roelfsema carries a 3.85 GPA as a psychology major. In addition to her tremendous performances on the pitch, she has excelled in the classroom. In 2020-21, Roelfsema was named a first team United Soccer Coaches Scholar All-American, a member of the C-USA All-Academic second team, and a C-USA Academic Medalist. She is also a member of the Rice President's Honor Roll.
Rice returns to the field this Saturday, Oct. 2, when it travels to Bowling Green, Ky., to face East Division co-leader WKU at 7 p.m. The Owls enter the match with an 8-2-1 record, including 2-0 in Conference USA.
