HOUSTON — Junior midfielder Delaney Schultz scored a pair of first half goals and Rice held on to defeat Texas State, 2-1, Thursday night from Holloway Field.
The Details
Rice wasted no time getting on the board. In the second minute, Serena Pham passed the ball down the left side to Caleigh Boeckx, who found Schultz in the middle. She immediately fired it past the Texas State goalkeeper to give Rice a quick 1-0 lead. Schultz almost had her second of the match in the 12th minute, sending a hard shot from in close. But, Texas State's goalkeeper Beth Agee was able to stay in front of it and prevent it from going in. After the Bobcats had two great opportunities to tie the match, Schultz made her next chance count. In the 22nd minute, Mijke Roelfsema sent a perfect corner kick toward the front of the net. Schultz leapt and headed the ball into the back of the net to double Rice's lead, 2-0. Freshman Kennedy Hart had a chance to make it 3-0 in the 40th minute when she sent a shot toward the left corner, but Agee made a diving save and Rice went into halftime with a two-goal lead.
Three minutes into the second half, Rice almost had its third goal of the game. But, Bella Killgore's free kick rang off the crossbar. Rice peppered Agee with shot after shot, including Mikala Furuto's attempt in the 66th minute, but she sent it high and the Owls couldn't increase their lead. Texas State pulled within one in the 71st minute when Madison Humphrey got past Roelfsema down the left side and beat Killgore for the goal. The Bobcats had one final chance in the 85th minute, but their attempt went just by the left post, and Rice hung on for the victory.
What Brian Lee Had to Say
"The start was great. We've done that a couple of times this fall. Really, the whole first half, stylistically and for creating chances, that was the best we've played all year. I thought it was brilliant. The whole attacking group was really fluid. We were happy to be up 2-nil at halftime. 2-nil is a precarious score. If you get the third goal, the game is probably over. But if you get hit on the counter, then you've got your hands full."
