Rice falls in straight sets

WACO, Texas – The No. 12 Baylor Bears defeated the Rice Owls volleyball team in straight sets (25-18, 25-17, 25-17) Thursday evening on day one of the Baylor Classic. Rice (4-4) saw their four-match winning streak snapped as the Owls were held to season-lows in both kills (32) and hitting percentage (.114).
Sophomore right side Ellie Bichelmeyer led the Owls with 8 kills (.368) while senior outside hitter Nicole Lennon contributed 7 kills. Junior setter Carly Graham picked up her team-leading fifth double-double of the season with 24 assists and 11 digs.
Baylor (4-3) was led offensively by Yossiana Pressley, who totaled a match-high 17 kills while hitting .394.
The Bears hit .310 as a team and held a sideout rate of 79.6 percent.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Set
Baylor took the opening set, 25-18, despite both teams totaling 12 kills apiece. The Owls were undone by seven attacking errors in the frame. Rice trailed just 17-13 midway through the set but the Bears closed on an 8-5 run.
Second Set
Game two was almost a carbon copy as set one with the Bears outscoring the Owls 8-4 down the stretch the put the frame away. Baylor totaled a match-high 17 kills in the game and outhit the Owls .395-.094 in a 25-17 win.
Third Set
The Owls held a 9-8 lead but Baylor proved too much down the stretch by outscoring the Owls 17-8 the rest of the way for a 25-17 victory.
UP NEXT
The Owls will try to bounce back tomorrow when they face the McNeese Cowgirls in a neutral match at 5 p.m. on day two of the Baylor Classic.
