Honored by her peers for work during 2020-21
Rice's Sarah Schodrof has been named the inaugural C-USA Athletic Trainer of the Year for the 2020-21 academic year, the conference office announced on Wednesday. She was honored in a vote of the athletic training directors at each C-USA institution.
Schodrof, who enters her fourth season with the Owls, was instrumental to Rice and the conference as a whole when it came to COVID-19 management and policy creation during the unprecedented challenges brought on by the pandemic.
She was the administrative assistant for the C-USA COVID-19 Advisory Committee, creating infographics and serving as the communications liaison between all 14 universities. Additionally, she worked on the campus contact tracing committee, leading and training tracers on campus and in the Athletics Department, while managing the analytics and statistics of COVID at Rice. Due to a shortened staff, Schodrof also filled in for numerous sports, traveling with football, women's basketball and men's and women's tennis.
"The group of athletic trainers in the conference really believed we needed our staff to be recognized, especially after this year and all the extra work and challenges that were thrown our way," said Dean Miller, Rice Associate AD of Sports Medicine/Head Athletic Trainer. "Sarah really stepped up in a big way to assist the entire conference during this trying year and we became a better group that worked more seamlessly together across the league because of her efforts. I believe she is one of the most outstanding athletic trainers in America today."
Schodrof currently serves as athletic trainer for Rice's swimming team and is designated as the school's concussion expert.
This is the first year that the C-USA athletic trainers have recognized one of their own and will continue to do so annually following their yearly meetings.
