11 programs record perfect scores in the single-year computations
HOUSTON: The NCAA recently released its annual Academic Progress Rate data for all member institutions, and seven of Rice's 14 sports posted perfect four-year scores of 1000, while 11 of 14 earned perfect scores in the single-year data.
The Owls' men's cross country, golf, men's tennis, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's tennis, and volleyball programs each received a perfect four-year score in the latest data compilation. The women's cross country program has received a perfect score in each of the 22 years the NCAA has released information, while women's tennis extended its streak to 18 years, followed by volleyball (15 years) and men's cross country (14 years). Those seven programs, along with soccer, men's track & field, women's swimming, and women's track & field, recorded perfect scores in the single-year computations for 2024-25.
Each academic year, the APR of every Division I sports team is calculated using a simple, consistent formula. Scholarship student-athletes can earn 1 point for staying on course for a degree in their chosen major and 1 point for being retained (or graduating) at the end of each academic term. A team's total points are divided by the points possible, then multiplied by 1,000. For schools that do not offer athletics scholarships, recruited student-athletes are tracked.
This is the fifth consecutive year of publicly reported APRs after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, the Division I Board of Directors approved the release of APR scores but continued suspending program penalties. Normal Academic Performance Program penalties and loss of access to postseason competition returned last year and will continue this year. Teams scoring below the 930 benchmark will face strategic penalties that emphasize academics.
