HOUSTON — Rice Soccer defender Caleigh Boeckx and goalkeeper Bella Killgore were named the Conference USA Defender and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Tuesday afternoon.
The duo helped lead the Owls to a pair of shutouts to open the season, earning a 4-0 victory over Sam Houston State before following with a 2-0 win against Stephen F. Austin.
In the season opener, Boeckx helped hold SHSU to just six total shots, including none on goal, while recording her first career assist. The Calgary, Alberta native followed that by scoring the second goal in a 2-0 victory over Stephen F. Austin while once again keeping the opposition off the scoreboard.
Killgore picked up where she left off last year. Against SHSU, she faced six shots without allowing a goal. She followed that by facing 14 shots and making eight saves in a 2-0 victory over WAC Southwest Division favorite Stephen F. Austin, becoming the first goalkeeper in school history to open the season with a pair of shutouts. With her 15th and 16th career shutouts, the Houston, Texas native became the third goalkeeper in school history with at least 15 solo shutouts.
The Owls return to the pitch this Friday, Aug. 27, when it travels across town to face Houston Baptist. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed by the Husky Sports Network.
