
Rice Soccer Picked to Repeat as West Division Champs

Killgore, Schultz and Roelfsema named to Preseason Team; Roelfsema named Defender of the Year
HOUSTON — Rice Soccer was picked to defend its Conference USA West Division championship while goalkeeper Bella Killgore, midfielder Delaney Schultz and defender Mijke Roelfsema were selected to the C-USA Preseason Team.
Roelfsema was also selected as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.
The preseason team honors and divisional ranking were determined by a vote of the 14 C-USA head soccer coaches. Florida Atlantic was picked first in the league's East Division.
The Preseason Team and Defender of the Year continues a week of honors for Roelfsema, as she was also named to the College Soccer News preseason First Team All-American team and the TopDrawerSoccer Third Team Preseason Best XI.
Last year, Killgore was named the league's Goalkeeper of the Year, becoming the second player in school history to play every minute of the season. She led the league in win (14), goals against average (0.71), save percentage (.843), shutouts (11) and saves (70). She was also effective in the offensive zone, scoring four goals, including a league-best three game-winners.
Schultz is coming off a year where she was named to the All-Conference USA Second Team. She was second on the team with five goals while leading the league with eight assists and 18 points.
The Owls open the 2021 season tonight at 7 p.m. against in-state rival Sam Houston.
Roelfsema was also selected as the C-USA Defensive Player of the Year.
