Owls will host 11 home matches

HOUSTON — Coming off its best year in the history of the program that saw it reach the NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen, the Rice soccer team has released its 2021 schedule, announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Owls will host 11 home matches at Holloway Field. The campaign begins with a pair of exhibition games. Rice will travel to Fort Worth to face NCAA Elite Eight participant TCU on Aug. 10 before hosting Lamar in its lone home exhibition on Aug. 13.
The Owls begin the regular season hosting six of its first seven matches at Holloway Field, starting with Sam Houston State on Aug. 19. The Bearkats advanced to the Southland Conference tournament championship last year. Rice will then host Stephen F. Austin on Aug. 22.
Rice stays in Houston for its first road game when it travels to Houston Baptist on Aug. 27. It will be the first game in the series to be played at HBU's Sorrels Field.
The Owls open September with four straight home matches, beginning Sept. 2 when it hosts Texas State. Four days later (Sept. 5), they will host Texas. It is just the third time that the Longhorns will have visited Holloway Field and the first since 2018.
The following week, Rice hosts crosstown rival Houston on Sept. 9 before hosting SMU in a Sunday night contest (Sept. 12).
The Owls open their Conference USA slate on Sept. 16 when they travel to El Paso to face UTEP. It is the second straight year that Rice will open the conference season on the road.
Rice returns home to host Louisiana Tech on Sept. 24. The Owls will look to continue their dominance over the Bulldogs as they hold a 7-0-1 record while outscoring them 23-2.
October begins with a road game at WKU (Oct. 2). It will be Rice's first trip to Bowling Green since 2018. A week later, it hosts UAB on Oct. 8, having won six of the last seven matches in the series.
The Owls travel to Hattiesburg, Miss., to face Southern Miss (Oct. 14), before closing its home schedule with a pair of games against UTSA (Oct. 17) and Middle Tennessee (Oct. 22).
Rice closes out its regular season slate when it travels to Denton to face C-USA power North Texas on Oct. 28.
Rice begins postseason play when its travels to Boca Raton, Fla., to defend its Conference USA Tournament title, Nov. 3-7.
