
Simpson-Sullivan Wins National Title

Forbes places 31st in 10,000m at U.S. Olympic Trials
EUGENE, Ore. – The Rice Owls women's track and field team was well-represented on the national stage on Saturday with two current student-athletes and one alumna vying for a trip to the Tokyo Olympics.
Freshman thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan began the day in grand fashion by winning a national title in the hammer throw across the pond at the British Championships. The Penrith, England native won the competition with her best throw (67.38m) coming on her final attempt, besting Jessica Mayho's mark of 67.08m. Simpson-Sullivan recorded a series of 65.49m/62.08m/64.65m/61.58m/65.37m/67.38m.
Simpson-Sullivan had a superb outdoor campaign, earning First Team All-American honors and winning a C-USA title in the hammer throw while breaking the school record.
Outdoor freshman distance runner Grace Forbes also concluded a historic season by placing 31st in the 10,000m at the U.S. Olympic Trials, competing against the best runners in the world. The youngest competitor in the event, Forbes finished in a time of 33:28.98 and improved as the race went on from 38th place.
The C-USA Female Track Athlete of the Year, Forbes put a bow on a year in which she earned All-American honors in cross country, indoor T&F, and outdoor T&F. Forbes won a combined six C-USA titles and broke five school records.
To conclude the evening, Rice alumna Ariana Ince placed fourth in the javelin with a throw of 57.49m (188-07), that coming on her fourth throw. Ince entered the meet ranked No. 15 in the world.
