DALLAS – For the second time in her career, Rice senior jumper Michelle Fokam was named one of 14 Conference USA student-athletes to receive the league's Spring Spirit of Service Award, the league announced on Tuesday (June 15).
The C-USA Spirit of Service Award recognizes the community service efforts of the league's student-athletes, based upon significant public service, good academic standing and participation in their elected sport.
Fokam has been a consistent participant at Houston Food Bank, Bread of Life Houston, Main Street Ministries, and The Forge for Families. Even during the pandemic, Fokam logged 40 hours at One Fair Wage and was a volunteer education content creator for the Houston Youth Voters Conference. While serving as the Owl in Action Committee Chair, Fokam led both the EmpowHer Everyday Series and spearheaded Rice's involvement in the NCAA Diversity and Inclusion Social Media Campaign. Fokam also served as the Presidential Intern for Student Affairs this year.
In the classroom, the Katy, Texas native maintained a 3.23 undergrad grade point average in psychology and is a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
Fokam qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships where she placed third overall and earned First Team All-American honors in the triple jump. Fokam was fifth at the NCAA West Prelims and selected the C-USA Female Field Performer of the Meet for a third consecutive outdoor season after winning both the triple jump (13.60m-school record) and long jump (6.47m) at the C-USA Championships. The titles were the 9th and 10th of her illustrious career. Fokam will also be competing later this week at the US Olympic Trials.
