Will join team for summer workouts
Dunlevie Family Head Football Coach Mike Bloomgren on Monday announced the signing of transfer quarterback Luke McCaffrey to a grant in aid for the 2021-22 school year.
He will join the Owls for summer workouts and be eligible to compete for the starting quarterback job when Rice opens training camp in August.
McCaffrey played in seven of eight games at Nebraska in 2020, including a pair of starts. He completed 48-of-76 passes for 466 yards and one touchdown while rushing 65 times for 364 yards and three touchdowns. He was the Huskers' third-leading rusher and ranked 15th nationally among quarterbacks rushing in the regular season.
He led Nebraska to a 30-23 win over Penn State in his first career start, becoming the first Husker quarterback to win his starting debut since 2013. McCaffrey completed 13-of-21 passes for 152 yards, including a 45-yard touchdown pass. He also led Nebraska with 67 rushing yards with a touchdown.
He originally announced his transfer from Nebraska in January and committed to Louisville, but elected to re-enter the transfer portal before attending summer classes.
McCaffrey's older brother Christian was the 2015 AP Offensive Player of the Year at Stanford in the Cardinal offensive attack coordinated by Bloomgren.
As a high school senior, Luke McCaffrey was ranked as the nation's No. 142 overall prospect by ESPN.com, which listed him as the top prospect in Colorado and the No. 5 dual-threat quarterback in the country. He was also the top player in Colorado, the No. 11 athlete prospect in the nation and among the top 300 players in the nation in the 247Sports Composite rankings. He selected Nebraska from numerous schools including Colorado, Michigan, Ohio State, Washington and UCLA.
