COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Rice Owls women's track & field team opened day one of the Texas A&M Invitational by recording four personal best marks and a victory Friday at E.B. Cushing Stadium.
Sophomore thrower Julie Perez got the Owls out to a great start in the first event of the day by placing second overall in the discus with a PB throw of 53.79m (176-5) on her very first attempt. Perez's effort ranks No. 2 all-time in program history behind Krystal Robinson (55.94m in 2006) and slots her 15th on this season's NCAA West List with a good chance of qualifying for regionals.
Also in field events, senior Michelle Fokam placed seventh overall in the long jump with a season-best performance of 6.13m (20-1.50) while freshman Elena Siemens established a season-best and PB mark of 3.68m (12-0.75) to finish ninth in the pole vault.
Freshman Elizabeth Kraule will enter Saturday in fifth place in the heptathlon after racking up 2997 points through four events on Friday, which included a third place result in the shot put (11.22m).
To conclude the evening, senior distance runner Khayla Patel won the 5000m with an effort of 17:44.8 for her second career victory in the event. Patel closed the final 400 meters in 72 seconds.
