Freshman ranks No. 5 in NCAA in hammer throw
DALLAS - Rice freshman thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan was named the Conference USA Female Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday after her following yet another school record-breaking performance in the hammer throw.
The Penrith, England native continued her storybook outdoor season by shattering her own school record in the hammer throw with a winning mark of 67.67m (222-00) last Friday afternoon at the Roadrunner Invitational.
Simpson-Sullivan bested her previous school record of 65.53m, set just two weeks ago, with the NCAA's No. 5 ranked throw. The personal best performance also ranks as the top mark in the hammer throw by a freshman in the nation this season.
Simpson-Sullivan originally broke Dreu Dixson's hammer throw school record (56.92m-2017) in the season opener at the Longhorn Invitational back on Mar. 6. Since that date, Simpson-Sullivan has re-established her own school record on three occasions. The victory was Simpson-Sullivan's sixth of the outdoor season.
This marks a third consecutive week that the Rice women have won at least one C-USA Athlete of the Week award.
Simpson-Sullivan and the rest of the No. 29 ranked Owls will be hosting the 17th annual J. Fred Duckett Twilight this Saturday, April 24 at Wendel D. Ley Track & Holloway Field.
