Senior met Olympic Trials qualifying mark in triple jump
DALLAS - Rice senior jumper Michelle Fokam was named the Conference USA Female Field Athlete of the Week on Wednesday following her personal best triple jump performance last weekend at the Texas A&M Invitational.
Fokam, who earned her seventh career C-USA weekly honor between the outdoor and indoor seasons, earned a trip to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials by besting the triple jump qualifying standard mark (13.50m) with a winning leap of 13.52m (44-4.25) last week in College Station. The jump ranks No. 2 all-time in program history just behind school record holder Claudia Haywood, who jumped 44-6.25 in 1993.
Fokam's mark, which was a EB Cushing Stadium record, currently ranks sixth overall in the NCAA this outdoor season and the victory was her 12th in the triple jump in her decorated Rice career.
Fokam and the rest of the No. 32 ranked Owls will be competing in San Antonio this weekend at the Roadrunner Invitational.
