Senior will wrap up home dual career on Saturday
Rice senior Mohamed Abdel-Aziz, who has matched his career-best in singles wins this year, was named the Conference USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Surf & Turf Golf.
He is the first Owl to win the weekly award in men's tennis since Sumit Sarkar was honored three times during the 2019 season.
Abdel-Aziz was undefeated over the weekend as the Owls split matches with 50th ranked SMU and Prairie View. He won in three sets over SMU's Caleb Chakravarthi on Saturday and in straight sets over PVAMU's Juan Viada on Sunday. His three-set win over Chakravarthi, who was playing his first match at the second line after occupying the top spot in the lineup, allowed the Owls to tie the match 3-3. He also picked up the first two wins of his career at the first doubles line, combining with Conrad Russell to defeat Chakravarthi and Tomas Vaise on Saturday and Vida and Jorge Cabellero on Sunday.
The two singles win improved his season record to 11-4, matching his total from his freshman season when he was 11-10. The two wins also improved his home singles record to 9-1.
Abdel-Aziz will be one of five Owls honored this Saturday on Senior Day prior to the meeting with #20 Tulane at 1 p.m.
