Fokam, Gunnarsdottir Shine at Texas A&M Invitational

COLLEGE STATION, Texas - The Rice Owls women's track & field team put the finishing touches on a successful weekend in College Station by picking up a pair of victories at the Texas A&M Invitational on Saturday.
Senior Michelle Fokam set a personal best distance in the triple jump with a winning leap of 13.52m (44-4.25), which was dangerously close to besting Claudia Haywood's school record of 44-6.25 set in 1993. Fokam's mark, which was a EB Cushing Stadium record, currently ranks fourth overall in the NCAA this outdoor season and the victory was her 12th in the triple jump during her illustrious outdoor career.
Also earning a victory and setting a personal best record was sophomore thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir in the shot put. Gunnarsdottir set another Icelandic national record with a winning throw of 16.72m (154-10.25), which ranks 17th in the NCAA this outdoor season and also a stadium record.
To conclude the evening, Natalie Goddard established a personal best time of 11:13.01 to place second in the steeplechase.
The Owls wil be back in action next weekend when they partake in the Roadrunner Invitational on April 24 in San Antonio.
