Owls Win Two Events at Victor Lopez Classic

HOUSTON, Texas — Hosting the 38th annual Victor Lopez Classic, the Rice Owls women's track & field team picked up two individual victories.
Maryam Hassan set a PR on her way to her second victory of the outdoor season in the triple jump, leaping 12.18m (39-11.50). Tara Simpson-Sullivan earned her third victory of the season in the hammer throw, just missing her season-best mark with a throw of 64.46m (211-05).
The Owls also got second-place finishes from Julie Perez (discus-47.21m), Kenechukwu Nwadei (high jump-1.7m), Alyssa Balandran (1,500m-4:42.87) and Taigen Hunter Galven, who set a PR in the 800m with a time of 2:13.89.
At the Texas Relays, Michelle Fokam finished third in the triple jump with a distance of 13.37m (43-10.50). Erna Gunnarsdottir competed in the shot put, finishing sixth with a distance of 16.25m (53-3.75). Simpson-Sullivan also finished seventh in the hammer throw at the Texas Relays on Thursday with a mark of 62.61m.
