Rice Next Hosts Southern Miss Sunday At 1 PM
HOUSTON — Mikala Furuto and Delaney Schultz scored first half goals and Bella Killgore recorded her fourth complete game shutout of the season to pace the Rice Soccer team to a 2-0 home victory over visiting crosstown foe Houston Baptist Thursday night at the Owls' Holloway Field.
Scoring Story
Rice was on the offensive early with one of its best first halves of the season. In the game's third minute Haley Kostyshyn launched a wide serve on the left side near the center line on HBU's side. She found true freshman Mikala Furuto over on the right wing charging toward the 18. As the HBU defenders shifted over to contain the threat, Furuto settled the ball and blasted away from range. She found the back of the net on the left side for her third goal of the season.
Rice continued to apply the offensive pressure and was back on the board later in the period. In the 33rd minute, junior Delaney Schultz made crafty move to elude defenders and fire away for her first shot of the night. The ball slipped past the line for a 2-0 advantage.
That was more than enough room for Killgore and the defense. With some solid support from the Owl backline that held HBU to just nine shots, Killgore needed only two saves for her fourth shutout.
For The Record
Rice improved to 7-2-0 on the year with its third-straight win. HBU is now 2-9-1 overall.
Coach Lee Said
"It was another positive night at Holloway," said Rice head coach Brian Lee. "We were able to rotate quite a bit and get some important extended minutes for some players. We are looking forward to getting back to C-USA play on Sunday with a big test from a quality Southern Miss team."
