Second Owl honored this spring
Rice sophomore Maria Budin has been named Conference USA's Female Tennis Athlete of the Week for the week ending February 8. All C-USA weekly awards are presented by Surf & Turf Golf.
Budin was undefeated in a pair of matches in both singles and doubles as the Owls defeated Texas A&M Corpus Christi on February 4 and then snapped an eight-match losing streak against Texas Tech with a 4-3 win on February 6.
She opened her week by combining with Diae El Jardi to clinch the doubles point with a win at the first line against A&M Corpus Christi and then quickly increased the lead to 2-0 with a win in singles.
Budin set the early tone for the Owls in their first win over Texas Tech since 2010 when she combined with Diae El Jardi to defeat the Red Raiders 43rd ranked #1 doubles team of Lisa Mays/Kaitlin Staines and clinch the crucial opening point. The win was the first for the duo against a top 50 opponent. She added the Owls third point of the day with a straight set win at the sixth singles line.
It is her first honor from C-USA and the second for the Owls in the dual season. Freshman Federica Trevisan picked up the award in the first week of the season. Linda Huang was named the Women's Tennis Athlete of the Month in October during the abbreviated tournament season.
The Owls will be back in action on Friday at 12:30 p.m. when they host UTA in a match moved up from Saturday due to anticipated weather issues. A final decision as to the location of the match, either at GRBTC or indoors at the Jewish Community Center, will be made later in the week.
