Owls Sweep Series at UTSA

Mulkey scores 20 points in victory
SAN ANTONIO – Rice senior center Nancy Mulkey scored a team-high 20 points and was one of three Owls to score in double-figures in a 69-57 victory Saturday afternoon at UTSA.
The Owls (6-1, 2-0) swept the weekend series from the Roadrunners (2-5, 0-2) by outshooting UTSA from the field, 49 percent-33 percent. Mulkey shots 8-of-12 from the field (4-of-5 at the charity stripe) on Saturday to finish the weekend a combined 16-of-23 from the floor against UTSA.
Rice senior guard Sydne Wiggins tied a season-high with 14 points while also collecting a season-high seven rebounds and sophomore Katelyn Crosthwait added 11 points.
The Owls recorded 20 assists as a team on their 27 made field goals, the third game this season Rice has dished out 20 or more assists.
With the victory Rice moved to 2-0 in Conference USA, marking the fourth straight season they've begun 2-0 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Rice outscored UTSA 26-16 in the opening quarter behind a 77 percent shooting performance from the field. Mulkey scored 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting from the field (2-of-3 free throws) while Wiggins went on a personal 9-0 run on a trio of made three-pointers. The Owls assisted on eight of the 10 made field goals in the quarter.
Second Quarter
The Owls posted a 15-11 advantage in the quarter behind six points apiece from sophomore forward India Bellamy and Crosthwait. Rice limited UTSA to just 28 percent shooting in the period.
Third Quarter
After UTSA had trimmed the Owls advantage to 49-39 midway through the quarter, Rice answered back with a 13-0 run over the final 4:36 to create a 62-39 cushion entering the fourth. Wiggins was instrumental during the stretch, scoring the final five points and recording assists on three other made field goals.
Fourth Quarter
The Owls were outscored 18-7 in the final quarter but never saw their lead in jeopardy, maintaining a double-digit advantage throughout.

Rice returns home to host a series against the UTEP Miners (5-2, 2-0) next weekend beginning next Friday, Jan. 8 at 1 p.m. from Tudor Fieldhouse.
