Owls Take Game One from Miners

Four players score in double-figures in 74-68 victory
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team placed four players in double-figures, led by a game-high 16 points from sophomore Lauren Schwartz, to defeat the UTEP Miners 74-68 Friday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (7-1, 3-0) won their 19th consecutive Conference USA home game (14th straight overall) by shooting 50 percent from the field, their fourth game this season at that mark or higher.
Schwartz made 6-of-11 shots from the floor, which included 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, and led the team with five assists. Senior center Nancy Mulkey added 15 points (6-of-10 from the field) and set a season-high with six blocks while junior guard Jasmine Smith (13 points) and Haylee Swayze (12 points) also scored in double-figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
The two teams exchanged lead changes seven times but it was Rice who led, 20-18, after 10 minutes thanks to a Schwartz three-pointer in the final seconds. The Owls shot 7-of-11 (64 percent) from the field in the period with Mulkey (6 points) and Schwartz (5 points) leading the way. UTEP's Destiny Thurman scored seven points in the quarter and the Miners scored 11 points off turnovers.
Second Quarter
UTEP briefly took the lead in the early moments of the quarter but the Owls won the quarter, 21-16, to take a 41-34 lead at the half. Smith led all players with seven points in the period while Schwartz and Swayze chipped in five points apiece.
Third Quarter
The Owls' defense shined in the third, limiting UTEP to just 11 points and 28 percent shooting. An Ashlee Austin three-pointer was the start of a 9-2 run that extended the Rice lead to 56-41 before the Owls eventually took a 59-47 lead into the final quarter.
Fourth Quarter
The Miners won the final quarter 21-15 but never allowed the Miners to get any closer than five points. Sydne Wiggins scored five points in the quarter for the Owls and knocked down a clutch three-pointer, one of seven long balls on the afternoon for Rice.
