HOUSTON, Texas — Junior golfer Jake Benson earned First Team All-Conference USA honors, announced Thursday afternoon by the conference office.
He becomes the first Rice golfer to earn All-Conference honors in back-to-back years since David Lawrence earned All-Southwest Conference honors in 1995 and 1996.
Prior to having his season cut short due to COVID-19, Benson was on his way to a second straight NCAA Regional berth. He led the Owls with a 72.00 stroke average, the third lowest in a season since 1991, while being the team's top finisher four times in seven events. The Nottingham, England native recorded two top five, three top ten and five top 20 finishes. He also led the team with 13 rounds of par or better.
Benson opened the season with a fourth-place finish at the Lone Star Invitational. He followed by tying career-lows for low-36 hole score (138) and low 54-hole score (208) at the Trinity Forest Invitational on his way to a seventh-place finish. Benson tied for second-place at the Health Plan Mountaineer Invitational.
Benson finishes the 2019-20 season ranked second since 1991 in career stroke average (73.51), third in average vs. par (+1.99) and sixth with 36 career rounds of par or better.
