First voluntary workouts to begin on June 17
HOUSTON-Three months after the COVID-19 pandemic brought a sudden end to all activities, a limited number of Rice fall sports student-athletes will begin voluntary workouts on campus on June 17.
"We are excited to welcome our local, fall sport student-athletes back to campus for voluntary workouts," Rice Director of Athletics, Joe Karlgaard said. "Our staff has worked very thoughtfully on a plan that promotes safety and allows for mitigation in the event of any positive occurrences of the virus. We hope June 17 marks the beginning of our transition to having all of our student-athletes successfully return for fall semester."
This first phase of workouts will be limited to the local returning members of Rice's football, soccer, volleyball and men's and women's cross country teams who have completed COVID-19 screening and other required pre-participation examinations. Screening for the participants will begin on Thursday, June 11.
Per NCAA rules for voluntary activities, engagement with the student-athletes is limited to Rice strength and medical staffs. Selected members of our coaching, facilities and sports administrative staffs will return to campus this week as well. Student-athletes will be organized into sport-specific workout groups and only be allowed in the facilities during their assigned times for conditioning work or medical treatments.
Activities will be limited to the specified areas of these athletic department facilities.
Workout plans for each sport maximize social distancing within each facility, with workflows mapped to emphasize this need. All workout equipment will be thoroughly cleaned and all areas of the facilities in use will be fogged each night.
Everyone entering the facilities will be required to wear face coverings while on campus unless it is during one of the scheduled physical activities. In order to ensure proper social distancing protocols, all activities will be scheduled in advance and no student-athletes will be permitted in the facility outside their scheduled periods.
Sports medicine staff members will wear N95 masks and the student-athletes must wear a face covering during treatment in the event of an injury unless the injury is to the face. In the event the injury is to a student's face, the sports medicine staff member will wear a face shield.
All strength and conditioning staff will be required to wear a mask at all times, when in the presence of others. While the need for spotting is unlikely in the initial phase of training, the strength staff will spot from each end of the bar as opposed to standing over the student-athlete.
