Rice Memories: Morris Almond

I owe everything to Rice University. Rice was the school that took a chance on me when few others did, and for that, I will forever be in their debt. My sole goal during my Rice career was simply to make Coach Willis Wilson and his coaching staff feel vindicated in their decision to patiently develop, groom, and nurture my ability so that I could maximize my potential as an athlete and as a man.
When I reflect upon the fact that Rice was the catalyst for me to achieve my life-long dream of graduating college and playing basketball at the highest level, I can express nothing but supreme gratitude. It is not lost upon me how fortunate I was to have had my path cross through such a prestigious institution of higher learning.
Hailing from a town right outside of Atlanta, GA, I definitely faced some initial challenges as an out-of-state kid that was transitioning to life away from home. I will be the first to admit that it was beyond disheartening to see limited minutes in my first two seasons as an Owl, before finally starting my first game as a junior. But, unbeknownst to me, the coaching staff always had the bigger picture in mind in terms of my personal and athletic development. They took a raw, unrefined project of a prospect and molded him into a scholar and a First Round NBA draft pick. They taught me the value of patience, persistence, and paying dues; values that have sustained me throughout my adult years. I am without a doubt a better father, husband, brother, and son because of my time as an Owl. And I will forever represent my alma mater with pride everywhere I go.
