DALLAS - The Rice Owls women's track and field team swept the Conference USA Athlete of the Week honors with Michelle Fokam (Female Field) and Grace Forbes (Female Track) grabbing the accolades, the league office announced on Tuesday.
Fokam was the recipient of the C-USA Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this indoor season after winning the triple jump and placing second in the long jump at last week's Houston Invitational. Fokam tied a season-best mark of 13.05m (42-09.75) in the triple jump, a distance which leads all of C-USA and ranks 14th in the NCAA. Her leap of 6.17m (20-03.00) in the long jump pulled her into a tie for the top mark in C-USA and tied for 21st nationally.
Forbes, named the C-USA Track Athlete of the Week, continued her phenomenal freshman campaign by breaking the Houston Invitational mile record with a time of 4:40.69, formerly held by Rice alum Lennie Waite (4:47.41-2012). Forbes' finishing time is the top mark by a freshman in the NCAA and ranks 19th overall, tops among all C-USA competitors. Forbes also was the third leg on the distance medley relay team, which finished fifth overall.
The Owls are back in action this weekend, Feb. 7-8 in College Station, Texas for the Charlie Thomas Invitational.
