Forbes earns High Point Scorer of Meet, Freshman of the Year
BIRMINGHAM, AL - For the fourth time in program history and the first since 2009, the Rice Owls women's track & field team secured the team title at the Conference USA Indoor Championships Sunday afternoon at the Birmingham CrossPlex.
The Owls amassed 110 points as a team to hold off second place Middle Tennessee (103 points).
Rice freshman distance runner Grace Forbes helped lead the way with 20 total points, winning both the mile (4:40.05) and the 3000m (9:21.19) to earn the C-USA Female High Point Scorer and Freshman of the Meet Honors. Rice head coach Jim Bevan was also recognized afterwards as the Coach of the Year, his third C-USA Indoor Coach of the Year award.
Also earning an individual title was senior Michelle Fokam, who won her eighth career C-USA title with a victory in the triple jump. The senior broke her own school record with a distance of 13.32m (43-08.50) to backup her second place finish in the long jump (6.19m). Sprinter Hannah Jackson also had a superb Sunday by winning the 200m (23.57) and finishing third in the 60m (season-best 7.52). The victory was Jackson's fourth at the C-USA Championship level.
The Owls also received all-conference performances in the field by KC Nwadei, who placed second in the high jump (1.76m), and Erna Gunnarsdottir who also finished second (15.69m) in the shot put.
