No. 13 Aggies Blank Owls
2/21/2020 8:17:00 PM | Men's Tennis
Host No. 49 LSU as part of combined dual on Sunday
College Station: The Rice men's tennis team saw an early challenge in doubles fall short and then saw 13th ranked Texas A&M roll to a 7-0 win at the Mitchell Tennis Center on Friday.
Doubles: While A&M took the early advantage with a win at the third line, the Owls staged rallies on the front two courts to keep the match's first point in contention until the final two games of the last match. Sumit Sarkar and Conrad Russell stormed back from a 4-3 deficit to win three straight games to take a 6-4 victory. Mohamed Abdel-Aziz and Karol Paluch fought off a break attempt at deuce while tied 4-4 at the second line to move the Owls within one game of the point, but the Aggies held their serve and then broke the Owls to eventually take a 7-5 win and take a1-0 lead.
Singles: The Aggies stormed to five first set wins in singles to keep the pressure on the Owls and held their advantage, winning all five matches in straight sets. Conrad Russell posted the Owls lone opening set win but was turned back in a second set tiebreak and then a superset to close out the match.
Up Next: The Owls(3-4) return to GRBTC on Sunday to join with the Rice women's team to host No. 49 LSU (7-2) in a simultaneous dual at 11 a.m. on February 23.
