Boeckx (Canada) & Roberts (Jamaica) Go Head-To-Head On Feb. 26
The Owl teammates will be friendly rivals when the two countries compete head-to-head in Group E play in the Dominican Republic on Feb. 26. The goal is to advance to compete in the 2020 Women's U-20 World Cup later this summer. Boeckx, a native of Calgary, Alberta, has attended four youth national team camps since 2017, but this is her first time to make a Canadian tournament team. Roberts has dual-citizenship for the United States and Jamaica. She has been in Jamaica's national training program since 2017 when she played for the country's Under-17 squad. Both Owls recognize the unique opportunity and relish to compete internationally.
"I was so excited when I got the call up for the U20 team," said Jaden Roberts, an Owl freshman who spent her first season at Rice in 2019. "It is an honor to be chosen to represent my country and I am ready to compete in the tournament. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity and I am thankful for the chance I have been given!"
"It is such an honor to be selected for the upcoming U20 Concacaf tournament for Team Canada," said Caleigh Boeckx, a junior forward for the Owls. "I am extremely grateful to be given the opportunity to represent both my country and Rice University at such a high stage. I know this will be a mentally and physically demanding three weeks but I am looking forward to competing alongside an incredible group of young women. I've grown a lot as a player throughout my time at Rice but have certainly grew more as a person. I am extremely excited!"
