Rice drops first C-USA contest since 2018
NORFOLK, Va. – The Rice Owls women's basketball team saw their 11-game winning streak come to an end on Thursday evening in a 66-59 overtime loss at Chartway Arena.
Rice (16-7, 11-1) and ODU (21-3, 11-1) exchanged leads eight times along with four ties before the Monarchs outscored the Owls 11-4 in overtime. The loss for the Owls was the first versus a Conference USA opponent since 2018, a span of 30 games.
Rice senior guard Erica Ogwumike posted a monster double-double with 26 points and a season-high 18 rebounds in the defeat while freshman guard Lauren Schwartz contributed 13 points.
ODU won their 10th consecutive game behind 21 points from Ajah Wayne, six of which came in overtime. Amari Young (15 points) and Taylor Edwards (14 points) also scored in double-figures.
HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
ODU quickly gained a 6-0 lead in the game's first two minutes but the Owls responded with a 9-0 run, five of those points coming from Schwartz. An Ogwumike jumper gave Rice an 11-8 lead with 2:48 remaining but ODU closed the period on an 8-1 run to win the quarter 16-12.
Second Quarter
The Monarchs extended their lead to 20-12 in the opening minutes of the second stanza but Rice chipped away at the deficit, outscoring ODU 16-8 the rest of the way to tie the game 28-28 at the half. Ogwumike took over for the Owls with 10 points and four rebounds in the quarter while Nancy Mulkey added five points and two blocks.
Third Quarter
Rice went on a 7-2 run to start the second half, which included one of Schwartz's two made three-pointers, grabbing a 35-30 advantage. The two teams took turns regaining the lead on five separate occasions in the quarter with ODU eventually taking a 42-41 edge going to the fourth. Ogwumike collected her 50th career double-double and 10th of the season in the period, totaling 16 points and 12 rebounds through 30 minutes.
Fourth Quarter
Neither team was able to gain separation in the final quarter. Despite ODU extending their lead to 49-43 with 8:37 remaining, Rice managed to keep at bay behind eight points from Ogwumike. A Victoria Morris three-pointer with 4:56 left gave the Monarchs a 55-51 lead, however the Owls held ODU scoreless the rest of the quarter and Ogwumike eventually tied the game on a driving layup with 1:27 remaining.
Overtime
The Monarchs scored the first seven points of the extra period, claiming a 62-55 lead with just 2:06 left after Morris made her second three-pointer. Consecutive scores from Haylee Swayze and Ogwumike brought the Owls to within 62-59 with a little over a minute remaining but Rice would be unable to get any closer.
Up Next
The Owls will look to get back in the win column on Saturday when they travel to Charlotte (16-7, 7-5) for a 3 p.m. (CT) contest on ESPN+.
