Third Owl to be named as a rookie
Former Rice punter Jack Fox is one of three Detroit Lions to be named to the NFC Pro Bowl team which was announced on Monday on the NFL Network. The 2021 Pro Bowl Game was scheduled for Jan. 31 in Las Vegas, but was canceled due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
Fox is the 12th Owl to earn a spot on a Pro Bowl roster and joins Bill Howton (1952) and Dicky Maegle (1955) as the only Rice products to earn a spot in their rookie year. Chris Boswell was the last Owl to play in the Pro Bowl, earning a berth on the team in 2017.
The 2018 Conference USA Special Teams Player of the Year, Fox is the Owls' career record holder with a 43.4 average.
Fox, who won the Lions punting job as an undrafted free agent, is just the third punter in franchise history to be named to a Pro Bowl, and the first since Jim Arnold in 1988. He led the NFL for the first three months of the season. His current net average of 45.3 yards ranks second in the league and is on pace to break Sam Martin's franchise record of 44.2.
In place of the Pro Bowl, the NFL is working with EA Sports to create a week-long series of matchups featuring celebrities, NFL Legends, current players and streamers playing the official Pro Bowl rosters on Madden NFL 21. The week culminates in a virtual Pro Bowl game with 2021 Pro Bowl players playing within Madden, which will be available for fans to watch across a variety of platforms.
