Updating the Owls in action
Darryl Grant (11/22) headlines a busy week:
Cheta Ozugwu, Gene Jones, Hamilton Nichols (11/18);
Trevor Cobb and Emmanuel Ellerbee (11/20);
John Burrell (11/22).
This week's trivia question: Seven Owls have scored a rushing touchdown in an NFL game. Can you name the last player to do so? Hint, he'll be blowing out candles this Sunday.
Before you find the answer, here's a rundown on the rest of the Owls in Week 10
Calvin Anderson— After taking 34 snaps on special teams over the first eight games, Anderson made his starting debut for Denver on the road at Las Vegas and played all 71 offensive snaps. The first Owl offensive lineman to appear in the league since Courtney Hall from 1989-96 Andersen made his debut vs. Tennessee in the opener after spending the 2019 season on Denver's active roster without appearing in a game. The Broncos will host Miami this Sunday at 3:05. (CBS)
Chris Boswell—Boswell scored his most points in over a year as Pittsburgh extended its club-best start to 9-0 with a 36-10 win over Cincinnati. Boswell hit three field goals and three extra points to finish with 12 points. The Steelers visit Jacksonville this Sunday at noon. (CBS)
Bryce Callahan- Callahan returned to the starting lineup after missing one game and was credited with three tackles and a pass breakup against the Raiders. He joined fellow former Owl Jack Fox on Pro Football Focus' Mid-season All-Pro team. The Broncos will host Miami this Sunday at 3:05. (CBS)
Donald Hollas, who celebrates his birthday
on Nov. 22, is the last Owl to score
an NFL rushing touchdown.
He scored his lone NFL touchdown
on 10/4/98 against Arizona.
He came off the bench in relief of
Jeff George to rally Oakland from
a 14-3 deficit and his one-yard
run provided the eventual margin
of victory in a 23-20 win for Oakland.
Jack Fox—Fox continues to lead the NFL in punting (52.1) and net punting (47.7) and was named to the Pro Football Focus Midseason All-Pro team. The Lions travel to Carolina on Sunday at noon. (FOX)
Phillip Gaines— Was limited to five snaps on special teams in the Texans' loss at Cleveland. The Texans host New England this Sunday at noon. (CBS)
Vance McDonald— McDonald has missed the last two games after being placed on the IR/COVID-19 list. He is two yards shy of reaching 2,000 receiving yards in his career (1,998). The Steelers visit Jacksonville this Sunday at noon. (CBS)
Andrew Sendejo— Moved past Courtney Hall for 11th on the Owls career list of NFL games played with his 119th game vs. the Texans (Michael Downs is 10th with 121). He was credited with three tackles in the game. Cleveland will host Philadelphia at noon (FOX).
Austin Walter— Walter was back in action for San Francisco against New Orleans and recorded his first career catch and rush. He caught a short pass and broke free for 27 yards and picked up three yards in his first carry. The 49ers are on their bye this weekend.
With Walter's 2020 debut, Rice has had 10 players see action in 2020, the most Owls to play in an NFL season in school history. Nine Owls saw action in 2015 to set a school record, but only eight were active for the opening weekend. Rice also had nine former players active in professional football between the NFL and AFL in 1961 and nine between the NFL and the All American Football Conference in 1948.
