Forbes Shatters Meet Record at Houston Invitational

HOUSTON - Rice freshman distance runner Grace Forbes broke the Houston Invitational meet record, held by former Owl Lennie Waite to highlight day one at Yeoman Fieldhouse. Forbes won the mile with a time of 4:40.69, besting Waite's previous record of 4:47.41 set in 2012, and currently sits ninth in the NCAA rankings.
In the field, senior Michelle Fokam improved from her previous meet in the long jump with a distance of 6.17m, which is tied for 15th in the NCAA. Other highlights on Friday included a season-best mark of 17.76m by freshman Tara Simpson-Sullivan, good enough for fifth overall and fifth in C-USA.
Day two of the Houston Invitational will begin on Saturday, starting at 12:30 p.m. with the women's pole vault.
