
Ince Wins Gold at USATF Outdoor Championships

Fokam places 12th in triple jump
DES MOINES, IA - Former Owl Ariana Ince captured the gold medal in the javelin with a winning throw of 61.06m (200-4) at the USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships Thursday at Drake University's Drake Stadium.
Ince, a 2011 Rice graduate, became the first Owl to win an outdoor title at the USATF Championships since Claudia Haywood won the triple jump in 1993. The Gonzales, Texas native began the event with throws of 46.80m and 49.05m before recording a mark of 52.95m on her third attempt, which moved her from ninth to seventh and a spot in the finals. After a throw of 52.10m, Ince heaved the winning throw of 61.06m.
Ince will next represent USA at the World Championships on Sept. 30 in Doha, Qatar, having already qualified with a mark of 63.54m in June.
In addition, current junior jumper Michelle Fokam placed 12th overall in the triple jump. Fokam capped off a stellar season in which she was named the C-USA Female Field Athlete of the Year.
