WT&F: Owls Win Five Events Over Weekend

Fokam victorious in long jump
HOUSTON - The Rice Owls women's track and field team won a combined five events between competition at the Houston Alumni Invitational (UH) and Carl Knight Invitational (SFA) this weekend.
Junior All-American jumper Michelle Fokam took over as the Conference USA leader in the long jump with a winning leap of 6.35m (20-10.00) at Saturday's Houston Alumni Invitational, moving into seventh overall in the NCAA in the event.
Rice also got a victory from junior sprinter Hannah Jackson in the 200m dash (23.89), who also was the second-fastest collegiate runner in the 100m dash (11.70). Junior Hannah Bablak gave the Owls an additional individual victory in the 800m (2:19.18) while sophomore Lourdes Vivas de Lorenzi won the 1500m (4:47.04) as an unattached runner. Vivas de Lorenzi also ran unattached at Friday's Carl Knight Invitational, winning the 5000m with a time of 17:32.04.
In other field events, freshman thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir was the second-best collegiate thrower in the shot put on Saturday, setting a season-best mark of 15.78m (51-09.25), which ranks 31st in the NCAA. Fellow throwers Dheryl Batts and Julie Perez also set new PRs with sixth place finishes in the hammer throw (53.00m/173-11) and discus (43.39m/142-04), respectively.
While training for heptathlon events, Zinedine Russell set PR's in both the 100m hurdles (14.34) and high jump (1.77m/5-0.75), placing third and second, respectively.
Ryann Helmers (1500m-4:42.79) and Loren Goddard (3000m steeplechase-12:02.20) were other highlights from the Owls in Nacogdoches.
The Owls will be back in action next weekend (April 12-13) when they compete at the Texas A&M Invitational and Multis from College Station.
