HOUSTON — Rice raced out to a quick 3-0 lead before Mohamed Abdel-Aziz clinched the match, as the Owls (11-11, 1-0) defeated Southern Miss (8-7, 0-2) in the first match of the C-USA Showcase, 4-1.
Doubles: Rice took an early lead on Court 1 as Sumit Sarkar and Conrad Russell jumped out to a 4-1 lead. USM's Ronit Bisht and Jorman Reyes pulled to within 4-3, but the Owls won the next two points to earn the victory. Seconds later, Eric Rutledge and Campbell Salmon clinched the doubles points for Rice with a 6-1 victory over Matthieau Peres and Youssef Tamimount.
Singles: Sumit Sarkar and Campbell Salmon wasted no time in staking Rice to a 3-0 lead as Sarkar defeated Ronit Bisht, 6-3, 6-1 and Salmon took out Youssef Tamimount, 6-0, 6-2. Southern Miss got on the board with a win on Court 2, but Mohamed Abdel-Aziz won a hard fought tiebreak in the first set on Court 3, 7-6 (3) before clinching the match for Rice with a 6-3 second set victory.
Efe Ustundag: We got off to a good start with doubles. I thought we came out with a solid energy and took care of it quickly. It translated early on into good play in singles. It's always great when you can get a quick point on the board. In our case, it happened very quickly, back-to-back, to get it to 3-0 and we were up a set on all the courts. So it puts a lot of pressure on the opponent. It was a good job by (Mohamed Abdel-Aziz), coming back from set point down to take that first set. I thought he actually played a clean second set after that. I'm happy to get this one over with. It's a long weekend. We'll take care of our bodies and get ready for tomorrow's match."
Up Next: The C-USA Showcase continues tomorrow at 2 p.m. from the George R. Brown Tennis Center. Rice will take on UAB while UTSA and Southern Miss will face off.
